About EGMUS

European museums play a crucial role in showcasing the richness and diversity of cultures. To ensure that museum resources are utilized effectively, a shared understanding is essential.

The definition of a museum can vary significantly across Europe—what qualifies as a museum in Spain may not be recognized as such in Hungary or Finland. Similarly, the data collected to describe museums in Slovenia may differ from that gathered in Belgium. This is not merely a linguistic distinction but a matter of underlying concepts and interpretations. European integration relies on acknowledging and understanding these differences. Effective communication, mutual learning, and collaboration depend on this shared comprehension.

EGMUS focuses on museum statistics, with its primary objectives being the collection, comparison, and analysis of statistical data across Europe, ultimately striving for greater harmonization. Experts from museums, statistical and research institutions, and Ministries of Culture work in close cooperation with Eurostat to achieve these goals.
