International Activities
EGMUS is actively involved in a number of European and international initiatives related to museum statistics and cultural data. These collaborations support the development of harmonised methods and the exchange of expertise across countries.
Selected Projects and Collaborations:
An international standard defining core concepts for museum statistics. Developed in cooperation with EGMUS to support harmonised data collection.
With the publication of ISO 18461:2016, museum statistics have a unified international framework. Built on years of work by EGMUS and coordinated by experts from across Europe, this standard defines key museum types, visitor services, and counting methods to ensure globally comparable data. It also lays the foundation for future standards like ISO/CD 21246 – Key Indicators for Museums.
A European project that collected data on the digital activities of museums. EGMUS was an associated partner and uses ENUMERATE results to complement its own work on digitisation.
EGMUS was actively involved in the ENUMERATE Thematic Network, which provided annual stakeholder reports to document the activities and outcomes of the network.
An EU initiative aiming to improve the comparability and quality of cultural statistics across Europe. EGMUS contributes to the cultural heritage and museum-specific dimensions of this effort.
The ESSnet on Cultural Statistics developed a new European framework for cultural data – enabling reliable, comparable statistics on culture’s contribution to the economy and society. The final report presents key recommendations on cultural employment, participation, trade in cultural goods, and more.

The Compendium of Cultural Policies and Trends in Europe contains a comprehensive web-based survey of cultural policies in European countries and Canada. Initiated by the Council of Europe in 1998, it presently covers cultural policies of 42 countries. In the long run all 48 member states which participate in the European Cultural Convention should be included. The updating of the Compendium is an ongoing process. Targeted to a broad audience of policy makers and managers of cultural institutions, researchers and students, the Compendium offers ample possibilities to conduct comparative policy research and analysis.
