Analysis of EGMUS Metadata Collection

In 2024, EGMUS launched a metadata initiative to improve the comparability of museum statistics across Europe. Using the newly developed EGMUS Reporting Frame (ERF), 14 member countries provided detailed metadata on how they define museums, structure variables, and apply classifications in their national surveys.
This data was supplemented by earlier responses from five countries (2022), resulting in a sample of 19 countries. The analysis highlights key differences in statistical approaches and identifies shared foundations that could support future harmonisation.
Rather than calling for fundamental changes, the initiative proposes a pragmatic framework for translating national museum statistics into a more standardised and comparable format. The focus lies on the institutional side of museum statistics – not on visitor behaviour – and aims to enhance transparency, usability, and mutual understanding within the EGMUS network.
